Improving the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar starting at the beginning of life.

The Problem

More than 700,000 women and girls in Zanzibar lack access to high quality health care resources that help promote their health and prevent disease.

The documented maternal mortality rate remains high at 287 per 100,000 live births and the under-5 mortality rate is 52 per 1,000 live births

Hundreds of thousands who do survive childbirth spend the rest of their lives suffering from irreparable trauma and disempowerment as a result of lack of safe, dignified, and respectful care.

WAJAMAMA Foundation is a women-led NGO built on the belief that in order to see the greatest social change, we must prioritize the beginning of life.

We believe that the power to form healthy and beautiful beginnings is a right that should be accessible to all.

Grassroots Organisation

We bring high-quality, evidence-based medical knowledge and skills and adapt this into locally tailored initiatives that meet the health needs of communities in Zanzibar.

Being on the ground allows us to fully understand the health care disparities that impact our community on a daily basis.

Solution

Our model is designed to ensure that women and girls are the healthiest versions of themselves physically, mentally, and socially.

We focus on health promotion and disease prevention through our holistic model that combines comprehensive high-quality clinical services, group prenatal and postnatal care, and facilitated discussions and training on topics of maternal and reproductive health.

This work is centered around our three pillars: Maternal and Child Health Care, Reproductive Health, and Nurse-Midwifery Workforce Development.

Our Future

In the next 10 years

We plan to establish our model as a social franchise to be replicated in more than 50 economically-marginalized communities in Zanzibar.

How we will do it

Capacity building and training of clinicians at private and public facilities, as well as nurse-midwifery students, to deliver and adapt our evidence-based group prenatal care model in their health care systems.

Developing trust in the public health system by integrating our holistic health care model into preexisting structures

Training networks of health care providers, student midwives, and youth health ambassadors to deliver our Well-Girl and Well-Woman models in their communities.

Building community through our existing programs and the extension of our group prenatal care to follow our pediatric population during their first 1,000 days of life.
